On 1 April 2025, a new draft law was introduced in the Hungarian Parliament that aims at suspending the citizenship of Hungarian citizens, who are dual nationals of “other” states – outside of EU/EEA area for up to 10 years.
Dual Hungarian citizens with Hungarian and EU/EEA citizenship are unaffected by this law change.

The law includes amendment to the Hungarian citizenship law to allow for the “temporary suspension of citizenship” aged above 14 years, if his or her activities endanger the national sovereignty, public order, territorial integrity or security of Hungary.
Th revised law has sparked international debate on dual citizen rights citizenship affect all Hungarian citizens including children – by birth and naturalized persons. For example, it empowers government leading to the expulsion or deportation of Dual Hungarian citizens, who have for example additional American, British, Australian, Canadian or Serbian citizenship, if they are deemed to threaten here is no threat to the public order or national security.
Previously, It was not possible for a person to lose Hungarian citizenship involuntarily. The exception concerns fraudulent applications for naturalisation (subject to a 20-year time bar after which action cannot be taken).
