Portugal has announced important changes to residence permit for Community of Portuguese Language speaking Citizens (CPLP) to legally stay in the territory of Portugal, approved by national assembly and government. The important change made is the law now allows CPLP uniform residence permit to holders, now can enjoy visa free movement in EU countries, ending any sort of discrimination.
The CPLP residence permit is valid for one year. It can be renewed twice for periods of two years. The permit has a maximum total validity of five years. After five years of temporary residence in Portugal, they can apply for a permanent residence permit.
Application from CPLP Citizens can apply online through the cplp.sef.pt portal. The application fee is €15 and the permit should be issued within 72 hours fully online.

- Cabo Verde
- Guinea Bissau
- Equatorial Guinea
- Mozambique
- Portugal
- Sao Tome and Principe
- Timor Leste
Among these countries, Brazil and Timor Leste nationals do not require visa to enter Portugal for short stays for tourism, business or visiting family and friends. All other countries can apply for a tourist visa and then can apply for residence permit.
