Portugal will start to issue new 10 Year Valid Portugal Electronic Passports to all citizens with new design and additional security features from 2026.
Portugal government has announced to extend the validity of epassports to 10 years from the current 5 years starting 2026 aligning with EU standards and to make it convenient for Portuguese citizens traveling abroad. The new passport will have new design and added security features in line with ICAO standards.
Currently, The Portuguese electronic passports is valid only for 5 years. For children under the age of four, the Passport is valid for two years.

The new version of Portugal electronic passport (PEP) will maintain high security standards, including more durable materials, anti-counterfeiting protection, and advanced printing techniques to prevent tampering and forgery.
The Portuguese electronic Passport is an individual’s travel document, which allows the bearer to enter and leave national territory, as well as the territory of other States that recognize the document’s function. Any Portuguese citizen is entitled to apply for a Passport. Applications for a Portuguese passport need to be made in person in the Institute of Registries and Notary offices. The Government has set €65 fee for Normal passports (5 days) and €85 express delivery (2 days) and €95 urgent delivery(1 day). The PEP passport comprises all the data necessary to identify the Portuguese citizens who travel out of the European Union and the Schengen area.
