Citizenship by investment (CBI) schemes require a FBI background check report from US citizens. It is the most important document required when submitting an initial application for citizenship and permanent residence in other countries. What is FBI background check?

The FBI check is a criminal history check showing identity history summary (a rap sheet). It is also called police certificate. It lists important information taken from fingerprint submissions kept by the FBI and related to arrests and, in some instances, federal employment, naturalization, or military service.

How to get it online?

The FBI has implemented a new option to electronically submit requests and receive responses for Identity History Summary Checks and Identity History Summary Challenges. The new eDO option will allow for faster processing of requests. Go to https://www.edo.cjis.gov

How much time it takes?

Under the current times, it takes 3 to 5 business days upon receipt of the fingerprint card.

Where to provide fingerprints?

You can provide fingerprints at any nearest US post office or by mail. There is also a fingerprint card. Refer to information here

How to get apostille on the FBI report?

Documents authenticated by the FBI may then be sent to the U.S. Department of State by the requestor to obtain an apostille if necessary. Due to Covid the apostille process takes 3-5 weeks. Please prepare accordingly.

What will the report say?

If there is no Identity History Summary on file, you will receive a response indicating that you have no prior arrest data on file at the FBI. If you do have an Identity History Summary on file, you will receive your report with Identity History Summary or “rap sheet”

What is the validity period of FBI report?

It depends on the country you apply. CBI units will require a fresh FBI report not older than 3 months. Read more here
